Andrology Laboratory

Revolutionizing Male Reproductive Health

Andrology is an interdisciplinary medical speciality which deals with the male.  The emphasis is on the physiology and pathophysiology of male reproductive functions. Primarily, its clinical focus is the diagnosis and therapy of male fertility disturbances and andrology as such is the male equivalent of gynaecology.  According to the definition of the World Health Organisation (WHO) andrology is engaged in all aspects of male reproductive health.

Physicians request andrology testing from the laboratory to determine a male patient’s fertility status (semen and hormonal tests}, usually when he and his partner have been struggling to conceive. It is also requested post-sterilisation (vasectomy) to verify whether the procedure was successful (total absence of sperm cells in the semen).

Sperm washing is a laboratory procedure regularly used in intra uterine insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. Its key purpose is to separate healthy sperm from the seminal fluid, and other cells which can contain potentially harmful particles such debris, bacteria and viruses or harmful substances such as prostaglandins and white blood cells.

Sperm washing serves several important functions: removal of contaminants, concentration of healthy sperm by separating immotile or dead or abnormal sperm.

Sperm wash goes through different steps: semen collection, liquefaction, Centrifugation/separation then washing and swim up in special solution to remove any
unwanted particles. Washed sperm can be used during artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization treatment. It can also be frozen and stored for future use.
